the Remembering Pendant

Historical Description

The Remembering
Remembered Artifact No. 003
Remembered Artifact No. 003
Among the personal objects attributed to the Ghinari, few appear as consistently as the simple circular pendant bearing the mark now identified as VALEN.
The surviving examples are not identical.
Some are carved. Others appear to have been burned or incised. Materials vary, as do size and construction. Yet the mark remains remarkably consistent: VALEN.
Remember.
There is no evidence that the pendant identified rank, family, profession, or wealth.
Its significance appears to have been personal.
what survives
Fragments bearing the VALEN mark have been recovered from domestic spaces, burial contexts, workshops, and sites believed to have been used for teaching.
Several pierced wooden discs suggest that at least some were worn on the body.
A small number show darkened recesses on the reverse. Analysis of surviving material has been inconclusive, although resin, pitch, wax, and organic binders have all been proposed.
Wear along the edges of several specimens suggests prolonged handling.
That detail may matter.
These were not objects kept untouched.
They were held.
Curator's Notes
Lily Ann Fenwyn

Robin Lee Kennedy
Crafting The Remembering in The Great Hall.
We once assumed VALEN was simply a word.
I no longer believe that.
Across the recovered Ghinari material, the mark appears wherever identity seems to have been under pressure: beside teaching texts, among personal possessions, on objects repaired rather than discarded, and occasionally beside other signs belonging to what we now call The Path.
Remember who you are.
Know what is true.
Refuse what is false.
Endure what follows.
Keep the Flame.
VALEN comes first.
Perhaps that was deliberate.
A person cannot defend what she has forgotten belongs to her.
And perhaps this is why these little objects show so much wear.
They were not declarations made for other people.
They were reminders made for the person carrying them.
Reconstruction Notes
Modern Remembering Pendants are reconstructed by
Robin Lee Kennedy for EMBERMARK using hardwood, hand-burned VALEN markings, dark resin, a hand-forged copper Forge Twist bail, cord, and traditional hand-finishing techniques.
Before each pendant is placed on its cord, the copper bail is individually formed into the Forge Twist—a small forged transition between artifact and wearer that has become a consistent feature of the modern reconstruction.
No complete Ghinari pendant has survived, and several elements of the modern reconstruction remain interpretive.
The circular form, VALEN marking, pierced suspension, dark reverse material, and evidence of repeated handling are based on surviving artifact patterns. The Forge Twist is a contemporary EMBERMARK reconstruction detail rather than a claimed archaeological feature.
The reconstruction is not presented as an exact replica.
It is an attempt to restore the function we believe mattered most.
To carry the reminder again.
VALEN
Remember.
Not the person you were told to become.
The person who was there before the telling began.
