The Care & Keeping of Remembered Artifacts

Every Remembered Artifact is individually made using natural materials, traditional techniques, and the marks of human hands.
Copper develops character. Wood responds to its environment. Leather softens with use. The small variations in shape, texture, and finish are not imperfections.
They are evidence of the making.
Your artifact was not created to remain untouched.
It was created to accompany you.
Made by hand. Meant to be carried.
Changed by time.

Copper | The Living Metal
Copper is a living surface. Over time, exposure to air, moisture, and the natural oils of your skin may deepen its color, soften its brightness, or develop a patina.
This transformation is natural.
For everyday care:
-
Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
-
Keep away from perfumes, lotions, household chemicals, and prolonged moisture.
-
Remove before swimming, bathing, or activities involving heavy perspiration.
-
Store in a dry location when not in use.
-
Avoid abrasive polishing compounds and chemical copper cleaners.
-
To bring back the copper's original luster you can can do at home:
-
Mix the solution: Pour 1 cup of white vinegar into a non-metal bowl and stir in 1 tablespoon of table salt until fully dissolved. Adding salt creates a powerful mixture that strips away the dark copper oxide (tarnish) to reveal the bright, "live" copper underneath.
-
Soak: Drop your living copper pieces into the liquid. You will see the dark tarnish vanish in 1 to 5 minutes.
-
Neutralize & Rinse: Remove the copper and immediately rinse it thoroughly.
Crucial step: Dip it in a mixture of water and baking soda. Vinegar leaves behind microscopic acid traces; if you don't neutralize it with baking soda, the copper will quickly corrode and turn blue-green. -
Dry thoroughly: Buff the item completely dry with a soft cloth because trapped moisture speeds up re-oxidation.
A note about patina
Some EMBERMARK copper artifacts are intentionally darkened to emphasize hammer marks, forged details, and repaired surfaces.
Aggressive polishing can permanently remove this finish.
A darkened surface is not necessarily tarnish to be removed. Sometimes it is part of the artifact's design.
A Note on Copper and Skin
Copper worn against the skin may occasionally leave a green or dark mark. This is a normal reaction between copper, moisture, skin oils, and environmental compounds. It is generally harmless and can usually be washed away with soap and water.
Copper can also cause skin irritation in some individuals. Discontinue wearing an artifact if irritation develops.

The Protected Patina
Some EMBERMARK artifacts feature copper that has been intentionally aged, darkened, or treated to achieve a particular finish. A protective coating is then applied to help preserve that appearance.
Unlike Living Copper, Preserved Copper is not intended to develop a natural patina through regular handling. The finish is part of the artifact's design, highlighting its hammer marks, forged details, textures, and reconstructed surfaces.
For everyday care:
-
Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth.
-
Avoid abrasive cleaners, metal polishes, and chemical tarnish removers.
-
Keep away from perfumes, lotions, solvents, and household chemicals.
-
Remove before bathing, swimming, or activities involving prolonged moisture.
-
Avoid scratching or rubbing the surface against hard objects.
-
Store in a dry location, away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.
A note about protective finishes
Protective coatings help slow oxidation and preserve the copper's appearance, but they are not permanent or indestructible.
Over time, friction and regular handling may gradually wear the coating, particularly along raised edges and frequently touched surfaces.
Do not attempt to polish, strip, or reapply a protective coating without contacting EMBERMARK.
The finish was deliberately created. Its preservation is part of caring for the artifact.

Wood | The Remembering Grain
Each piece of wood carries its own grain, color, and character. Each piece is purposely inspected and selected for the artifact it will become by EMBERMARK.
Wood responds naturally to changes in temperature and humidity. Proper care helps preserve its shape and finish.
For everyday care:
-
Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth.
-
Avoid soaking or immersing in water.
-
Do not leave in direct sunlight for extended periods.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat or humidity.
-
Never use harsh cleaning products or abrasive pads.
Small variations in grain and color are part of what makes each artifact unique.
Leather | The Mark of the Journey
Leather changes as it is worn.
With time, it may soften, darken, develop creases, and acquire a patina unique to its wearer. These changes are part of the material's character.
For everyday care:
-
Keep leather as dry as possible.
-
If wet, allow it to air-dry naturally at room temperature.
-
Never use direct heat to dry leather.
-
Wipe away surface dirt with a soft cloth.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
-
Do not apply oils, conditioners, or waterproofing products without first confirming they are suitable for the leather and its finish.
Leather cords and bracelet components should be inspected periodically for wear, particularly around closures and attachment points.

Resin | The Preserved Surface
Some Remembered Artifacts incorporate resin to preserve, protect, or illuminate details within the piece.
Although cured resin is durable, it can be scratched or damaged by heat and chemicals.
For everyday care:
-
Clean gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
-
Dry immediately.
-
Avoid abrasive cleaners and polishing compounds.
-
Keep away from acetone, solvents, and harsh chemicals.
-
Do not expose to excessive heat or prolonged direct sunlight.
Avoid placing resin artifacts against sharp objects during storage.

Sterling Silver | The Quiet Light
Sterling silver naturally develops tarnish through exposure to air and environmental compounds.
This is normal and does not indicate poor quality.
For everyday care:
-
Wipe gently after wearing.
-
Store in a dry location, preferably in a soft pouch.
-
Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, chlorine, and household chemicals.
-
Use a polishing cloth specifically designed for sterling silver when necessary.
If your artifact incorporates intentionally darkened silver, avoid polishing those areas aggressively.
